Re: What is this for?
A good tip is this.
Don't just rush into making your game with some loose ideas about what you want to do. Write down some ideas about the gameplay, enemies settings and for the story. This makes it so that you can have your ideas all condensed into one place and methodically starting to coplete each object room ect. Instead of jumping around. It may seem a little weird, but it really helps.
A good tip for making sprites(especially if your not that good at spriting) is this.
First sketch on real paper what you want to do. This helps for me cause most of the time I have no idea how to draw stuff with the mouse. Drawing on the paper helps so that you can see what the sprite will look like. GraniteGear has some tips too. Right here http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/65905

Re: What is this for?
Some more tips are to make the story a deep, interesting story (depending on if you can or not and if it even has a story), make plenty of action, variety, secrets and unexpected suprises and most of all stick with the game you're making.
