First topic message reminder :

I know platformers are getting so-so nowadays but i want to make a story intensive game to reel the player in.
I was wondering if anyone can offer help with a platformer AI? I want to try something else besides the usual move left-right type. i was thinking of several separate objects all with a rotating sprite(gun) attached to it walking around a level trying to look for the player and firing at whatever angle they want and jumping onto ledges to get a better shot. Any info and ideas are greatly welcome. screenshots will come soon.
please help me out or i end up looking like this smiley ---> affraid

<note: not finalized and may be subject to change>
Storyline:
Deep in a research facility, several containment units have broken down. A lone figure awakens after his stasis chamber breaks down along with several others. A lone guard comes in to investigate, unfortunately he bumps into him. The guard is killed without second thought the moment he approaches him. Taking the guard's weapon with the stranger, he sets himself on a journey to find answers. As he leaves the facility through a path in the sewers, he comes across a city that seemed familliar to him.

it's only the ai and platform engine. just need an honest opinion and wanna see if there are bugs even though i tested it over 100 times already. :3

Hang on I just read through this again, you're using whole songs in the game? that will slow it right down, use a loop or something short, I can make you loops if you're interested.
More ammo, really not enough.

replies:
-more ammo comes from the better later game weapons. i do believe you have the version with the rifle and pistol. those are just standard intro level weapons
-site sucks. super true, that's why i'm making a new one.
-to fooey: why won't it let you download?
-graphics are pretty consistent. throughout the game, i just need a bit of time with the tiles/backgrounds. i drew everything by hand/mouse. but it's good you liked the graphics.
-about the songs, im going to use low res .wav files. regular combat uses loops but to make boss battles more epic, i was thinking of using maybe 3 specific songs max. i hope it doesn't slow down too much though. im trying to compress everything as much as possible to make loading/playing faster.

hope that answers most of your replies today. Thanks for your opinions!

Ok It's obviously been more than three hours but anyway...
The only thing that I could think of would be to see if you could make the enemy NPC's to move on their own WITHOUT having to be close to the player or having been shot at first.
It could be set up some sort of path for them, even if it's only making them walk back and forth a few steps repeatedly.

Every thing else is great, except I couldn't pull out my third weapon, unless you haven't put it in yet!

One more thing, Have you thought about using "EXPLOSIVES"?

hmm, moving on their own huh. yeah, had some trouble with the code. i can take care of it though. best i can do is make them move back and forth along a bunch of 'waypoints' and each waypoint has a specific action like jumping, firing. sort of the bots from counter-strike.

explosives were planned. hell, who does not like all things boomy,burny and killy! waaaagh! i'll put those improvements on the updated version before friday this week. i added a new weapon by the way. i call it my 'meat grinder of death' minigun. :3

i was also planning on letting you guys use all the weapons on my development version. so instead of doing it by picking up stuff, you can scroll through all the available weapons by pressing q and e.

one last thing, i can't reply right away sometimes since i do my work at school and net at home is close to non-existent. so please bear with me if my posts are a bit delayed. thanks again guys for checking it out. will do another update by tomorrow. so if you guys want anything else to be added or if something's missing tell me so we can add those to the game.

good question. i was thinking of stronger versions of the mob characters (i.e. the necromachine leaders.) but the "real" main bosses are clones of the main character. Story states the main dude is supposed to be the last of 7 clone to escape from the facility. They fight like some metal gear bosses using a different fighting style for each type. first one im making is like vulcan raven from metal gear solid (google him). he's going to wield a massive machine gun and just strafes the character. something like the machine gun boss from metal slug.
So, watcha think about the idea for my very first boss?

UPDATE!
just added a newer version try the version 0.2 for a 'real' development test level. you can use all weapons now by using the q and e buttons instead so you can see how it all works.
don't worry bout the glitchy bullet graphic, it's only a test. the real main character does not have the same problem. i also added several enemy types there. enjoy! :3

P.S. give me ideas for 'explosive' weapons
i'm replacing the crappier types like the rifle with 5 shots to something else.
*watcha think about a Grenade Revolver. Flak cannon. and quad barreled rocket launcher?*

Heh heh, soz favourite weapon in unreal Tournament.

Okay the Boss, firstly the name of the boos is wrong, you mean Metal Gear RAY, not Vulcan Raven, never even heard of that one.

Secondly, the movement may be a little bit too easy for players who want a little bit more hardcore action going on.
Would it be possible to make the first boss move to a different position on-screen when so much of it's health has been taken away?
For instance it could be flying around the right-hand- side of the screen, you take away a third of the screen and the boss moves to the top of the screen, etc.

Ducking/crouching - not possible, character doesn't have legs
When you turn the gun points upside down - that's because the gun points towards the mouse and would be awkward if the character turned and the gun didn't

Okay, we are discussing how Bossroom's game could be improved, I was just discussing if it would be possible to add explosives in the game and how the first boos in the game should work.

Afterword, Js posted his idea on what could make the game better , as Boosroom hadn't replied yet I though I'd do it instead.

Melee attack - actually Metal Slug did something like this (hint,hint)

yeah, metal slug actually came to me about melee attacks. think if i add it should it "auto-knife" when enemies are close?

ducking-thought about it. and i considered it useful. specially with the insane ideas i have for a boss. (meaning you 'really' need to duck.)
they're not wheels by the way, the anatomy of my characters involves 3 'spheres' 1 for the head, second for the body, 3rd for the "lower-half"

yeah, watched the matrix. guess you made your point p.s. i tried doing that with my own arm. guess what? it HURT ;(....

sorry couldn't reply too much close to the weekends, i'm pretty tied up with my own paperwork... i'll just try getting to you as soon as i usually can though...

ps: i thought about melee, and i want to give close combat as an option, but something not necessary. i was considering putting the psi-blade i scratched off before this topic even started.

Um, since ur facing robots a knife wuldn't really work Very Happy guess u culd use a plasma knife or something, but a better idea wuld be a weak pistol with no ammo limit, sorta like the plaster pistol in StarWars Battlefront(best game ever btw)
