I know platformers are getting so-so nowadays but i want to make a story intensive game to reel the player in.
I was wondering if anyone can offer help with a platformer AI? I want to try something else besides the usual move left-right type. i was thinking of several separate objects all with a rotating sprite(gun) attached to it walking around a level trying to look for the player and firing at whatever angle they want and jumping onto ledges to get a better shot. Any info and ideas are greatly welcome. screenshots will come soon.
please help me out or i end up looking like this smiley --->

Storyline:
Deep in a research facility, several containment units have broken down. A lone figure awakens after his stasis chamber breaks down along with several others. A lone guard comes in to investigate, unfortunately he bumps into him. The guard is killed without second thought the moment he approaches him. Taking the guard's weapon with the stranger, he sets himself on a journey to find answers. As he leaves the facility through a path in the sewers, he comes across a city that seemed familliar to him.

pretty awsome vid. yeah, i got what you were thinking. i was considering more on the blaster pistol idea of fooey. im not exactly that good with making d&d or code for a melee system.

So would you be doing close combat in the game are just skipping that entirely?
Actually if you think about it would require a lot of programming, not just on the player but all the individual enemies as well!

nah, i'll stick with just the player having melee for now though and see if it works well. in fact the enemies are just carbon copies of the player with only different stats so porting a melee system from player to npc should work well.

working out pretty well, made a system to let the boss teleport around to some waypoints within the area

i was thinking that i use random warps. the boss i'm planning to do is a sniper and the level is a forest and he hides behind the bushes. to make it even harder only way of "seeing" the boss is to show the diffuse glow of the laser sight. sort of the sniper from metal gear: snake eater. except he's much quicker than the old fossil from snake eater.

Yeah but "The End" was quiet difficult, you couldn't even save during the fight and it lasted about a good two hours!
Any way you could make the boss do more than just sniper shots, set traps, make him throw grenades, anything just make him look like a "Professional".

note against "the end".... kill his pet parrot! :3i can try. im trying to make a dismemberment engine. im planning a total rewrite for the engine to make it more effective in code. and add a dual weapon system if possible. if i create an enemy character comprised of several objects like the head, torso and feet. will there be any problems? i was planning on making them use the jump function to "stick" to the main body, i have a feeling it's not gonna work out too well. any advice to make a dismemberment work effectively?

i know how to make it not lag: i use end step to stop if from lagging behind. google thing thing arena 3. it was ironic not knowing the game i was making was pretty close to that flash game. it got me fired up to make mine even better than theirs...

scene with the agents reminds me of the matrix. pretty cool. thanks for the share. i was thinking of a gray type of background with rare use of color just to highlight some details. blood splatter stands out really well this way. one more thing, saw the demon with his giant shotgun, t'was like WTF! i had the original plan of doing cutscenes like that or a comic book style like max payne. PS. I also loved the jesus type character in the end.

i did a dismember ment thing once.. it worked out pretty well no lag. and sparx i've seen that.

I just meant you could set your characters without having any limbs.....just hands and feet.

hey guys, quick question. the characters are great and all but i can't seem to make them work. any help on this? i use the code like
on draw event.
draw_sprite_ext(la,la,la)
i tried adding image speed but it doesn't animate. am i missing something here? i was thinking of adding an animated sprite for one of the characters like a bunch of gears...
yeah i was also thinking bout making them lose limbs. if that doesn't work, i can get them gibbed when they die
